Prevalence rates of clinically significant depression and anxiety in organ transplant recipients are lower than the rates in other chronic disease cohorts.
Up to 63% of transplant recipients experience depression or anxiety during the first several years after transplantation, whereas rates during comparable time periods are 3-10% in the general population and 10-40% in individuals with cancer, heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, and lung disease. This finding is perhaps surprising given the use of psychiatric evaluation protocols designed to screen out or identify candidates requiring mental health intervention pre-transplantation.
